STRATEGIC STATEMENT
I have always wanted to be both an artist and a teacher, so I decided to put the two together and become an art teacher. After I finish my Bachelor of Contemporary Art at the University of South Australia in 2020, I plan on moving onto my Master of Teaching in 2021. Even though most of my time will be taken up by teaching I still want to establish myself as an artist. I want to improve in the mediums I use and possibly continue onto my PHD in Arts after I finish my master’s degree in 2023.
As a future artist I imagine myself still working in areas of mixed media continuing to explore areas of myself and my disability within art. I think the way I will achieve this is by staying true to myself and doing the art that I want to do. I find it important to have fun and enjoy the art I make otherwise it does not work out. I would like to think that in the future I will be able to collaborate with other artists and curators as well as working with galleries and funding bodies to complete projects.
I believe my approach to making is really doing whatever I want to do at the time, I experiment with different processes, yet majorly in the end I do work that I enjoy. I also try to let my imagination take my making further then what is originally expected, to push the boundaries of understanding and let myself show through. My approach to exhibiting is again to let my imagination guide me to the best result. I also think that I am able to take advise from other artists and curators to help me exhibit to the best of my abilities. My approach to selling and marketing my work is honestly not the best and it is something that I am hoping on improving on as I grow as an artist. I am hoping on attending some courses on ways of marketing and selling work to improve.
I think my work fits into the broader social context of bringing more understanding to intellectual disabilities. I also often try to involve my own social structures into my art and help broaden the greater understand of art in other communities.
I think in the next five years my main objective is to have had my own solo show, this has something that I always wanted to do as I feel that having your own exhibition makes you a true artist. I would like to also do some collaborative work with my university friends Claudia Meaney and Stacey Wortmyer, as well as having a group exhibition. They are both such amazing artist and they inspire me daily even though our work is so different in a way just like our friendship we find a way to work in together.
My audience I think truly could be anyone but the main target audience for me would probably be young adults who are looking to improve their understanding of others within society. I think my work could be pleasurable to most audiences as the main message of my art does not need to be seen for it still to work together. Yet for my true objective behind the work would probably be best understood by young adults and other people with disabilities.
I plan to be working mostly out of a studio, whether that be a home studio or a studio residency, I am not yet sure as it will depend on my studies. Although if I were to do a residency, I would hope for it to be local so I will still be able to work outside of the studio where my art needs it. I think that my competitive advantage is that I have a different way of processing information there for I am able to create things that are out of the ordinary.
Finally, even though at this stage I am still an emerging artist, over the next five years I hope to tailor my skills in making to be able to present the best possible processes. As well as be able to express myself to the full extent.
